Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School, founded in 1384, is one of the UK’s oldest state schools. Dodd Group provided the installation of all MEP services on the project involved a mixture of new-build and refurbishment:
- Demolition of several outdated post‑war blocks.
- Construction of a new three-story teaching block housing departments such as DT workshops, modern languages, maths, catering, main hall, and a black-box drama studio
- Addition of a standalone activity studio/block serving sports and changing space alongside an energy centre
- Refurbishment and extension of an existing single‑story block to enhance the staff and office areas, sixth form and SEN department,
We were working in a live school environment whilst installing new extensive upgraded cross site services and liaising with the school to deliver the project over various phases
The design preserved the open “campus feel” while introducing cutting-edge teaching and sustainability features.
The teaching block is designed for net‑zero‑carbon operation, using roof‑mounted PV panels, high‑performance insulation, ground‑ and air‑source heat pumps, along with broader energy‑efficiency measures to cut both emissions and running costs including maximising the use of natural ventilation.
